Pippy making a comfy “tent” with her yoga blocks

Greetings felines and the humans who serve us!

I recently received a question regarding yoga blocks. The question was as follows: Pippy, what is the purpose of yoga blocks? They are aesthetically very appealing but how does one use them in their yoga practice?

Pippy appreciates this question and is happy to inform my readers further about yoga blocks. Yoga blocks which come in different sizes and shapes are made from a variety of materials including foam, wood, and cork and are used to maintain proper body alignment during yoga poses. Pippy thinks humans should use props as much as possible and not let your ego get in the way. Some human yoga students shy away from props because they think it’s a form of weakness to use the extra help. But lets face it humans! Not a single one of you will ever be as flexible as the cat so take all the help you can get and use a block!

Pippy loves yoga blocks! I often place one next to me while practicing yoga on my Feline Yogi Yoga Cat Mat.  Not because I need them to perfect my poses but because they are so much fun! There are no rules with them which is what makes them so inviting. I especially like to scratch the ones made of cork and foam, use their surface for rationing out my catnip, and paw at them when my purr-son uses them while practicing yoga at home. It’s especially funny when I knock her off balance! Buy hey, Pippy is helping her stay present and focused no matter what the challenges, right? Hee hee and Mew mew! 🙂

Until next week….

Meow and Namaste!

Love,

Pippy

Who’s Practicing Yoga on The Feline Yogi Cat Mat?

Allegra is! That’s who!

Allegra practicing Downward Facing Cat Pose

Allegra practicing Downward Facing Cat Pose

Allegra is on a mission! She’s had enough of Adho Mukha Svanasana, one of the most widely recognized yoga poses in the world, being referred to as Downward Facing Dog!  Nothing against dogs, but Allegra says it’s obvious this asana was most definitely inspired by a feline and it’s time they get credit for it!

To further make her case, Allegra is posing on her new Feline Yogi Yoga Cat Mat to show us exactly how this pose is done. Just look at Allegra’s perfect form as she practices this rejuvenating stretch. She pushes her femurs back, lifts her hip bones towards the ceiling, and stretches her hind paws down toward the floor. The outer part of her front legs are perfectly extended as she presses the bases of her front paw pads actively into the floor creating a beautiful spine stretch that human yogis can only dream of!

Allegra and her fellow feline yogini companion Ruby both love practicing on the The Yoga Cat Mat. In addition to being busy little yoginis, they both assist their human with running the award winning blog The Conscious Cat.  Their site features expert advice and information about feline health, nutrition and  lifestyle as well as their very own columns: Allegra’s World and Ruby’s Reflections.

Thanks to the grassroots efforts of activist felines like Allegra, one day yoga teachers around the world will refer to this pose by what it should have been called all along-Downward Facing Cat Pose!

Oliver chilling out on The Yoga Cat Mat

Oliver is! That’s who!

Oliver is a very handsome black and white kitty. He loves The Yoga Cat Mat because it’s soft, plush, and comfortable. From the picture above it may look like Oliver is just sleeping but he is really perfecting the art of Shavasana aka Resting Pose.

Oliver has two very busy humans who are constantly on the go and Oliver is a very busy feline as well. Because of his busy schedule he knows that it is up to him and him alone to make sure he takes time out of each day for some “Oliver Me Time”! And what better way than chilling out on The Yoga Cat Mat.

Keep practicing yoga Oliver!  Thanks for reminding all of us humans that we should take time from our busy schedules to practice yoga and more importantly to rest and chill!

Who’s Practicing Yoga on The Yoga Cat Mat?

Billy is! That’s who!

Billy loves The Yoga Cat Mat!

Billy is a very serious feline yoga practitioner and The Yoga Cat Mat has made it easier for him to perfect his yoga asanas. As you can see from the photo, he takes full advantage of yoga props as well!

However, not too long ago Billy was on the streets of Los Angeles in a neighborhood known for having coyotes! Yikes! Thanks to two wonderful kind humans, Billy was rescued from his dangerous situation. Steve and Candy welcomed him into their home with open arms and he was just as much of a blessing to them as they were to him.

Billy will forever be safe and sound now.  Billy can now concentrate on his yoga poses and enjoying the wonderful home he was so fortunate to find. Also, a big acknowledgment to Luxe Paws, an animal welfare group based in the Los Angeles Silver Lake area for assisting with Billy’s rescue as well!

Pippy’s Yoga Tip of The Week: The Best Time to Practice Yoga

Pippy Practicing Sphinx Pose

I’m often asked the question “Pippy when should I practice yoga? Is there a particular time of the day that is preferable?” My advice is to schedule your yoga practice at the time that works best for you. I personally prefer different poses at different times throughout the day. I realize most of you humans are busy with that thing you call “work” and various other distractions but if I can find time to incorporate poses into my busy schedule then so can you!

Below is a typical day of “Pippy Yoga” to inspire and motivate you.

SUN SALUTATIONS:

In the wee wee hours of the morning, usually around 4am, I practice a version of running sun salutation vinyasas. I race 8-9 times through the living room, kitchen, computer room, and then finally into the bedroom where I leap over the sleeping humans.

PARTNER YOGA POSES:

Rorschach and/or Hunter (two of the other felines who live with me) and I enjoy partner yoga at the foot of the human’s bed anywhere between 4:30-5:30am. In the middle of our practice the humans start getting all in a tizzy and yell at us to calm down but we keep right on going. Nothing interferes with my yoga practice! Plus we are doing them a service by helping them get up since we will all need to break our morning fast very very soon.

RESTING POSE:

After I eat and have a full belly I practice Shavasana aka resting pose. As a matter of fact I practice this pose quite a bit during the day even when my belly is empty.

SPHINX POSE:

When the humans are up and about during the day I practice Sphinx pose which is sometimes referred to by Westerners as Bhujanngasana.  Depending on my mood, I pretend I am an Egyptian desert statue of a hybrid creature or a Greek demon with a tail and wings.  This pose centers me and gives my humans a chance to admire my beauty and skill.

TWISTING POSES:

I practice variations of twists throughout the day. You might mistake me for sleeping but nothing could be further from the truth. I am actually restoring my spine’s natural range of motion and detoxing my inner organs.

RESTORATIVE POSES

To calm my mind and wind down from a busy day I utilize the pillows on the humans’ bed right about the time they are getting ready to retire around 11am.

MEDITATION:

Throughout the day I practice mediation several times. I fixate my glance at the birds outside the window. Oh, they would make a yummy treat but the human won’t let me out so I can try and catch them!

Until next week….
