Distractions that Hinder the Yoga Cat’s Practice

feline yogi yoga cat

Greetings Felines and the humans who serve us!

I’d like to specifically address the humans this week.  I know that you admire us yoga cats and rightly so yet you often make it hard for us to practice.

Do you want to learn from us and maybe just maybe reach a small bit of enlightenment in your lifetime? If so (or even if you don’t because you know you’re a lost cause) please take special note of the list below.  Take every precaution to make sure that we yoga cats’ yoga time is free from these distractions. Thank you in advance!

  • STROKING AND PETTING: Please don’t start in with a bunch of petting when we are meditating or practicing a particularly challenging asana. We prefer to come to you when we want pets and not the other way around.
  • TALKING IN A HIGH PITCHED TONE: We know that we are adorable creatures and do like to hear you say so but please speak to us as the supreme beings we are and not like we are toddlers.
  • EXCESSIVE PHOTO TAKING: Taking pictures of us constantly  while we are trying to practice yoga is very annoying.  Honestly what did you humans do before digital photography?
  • NOT ENOUGH YOGA MATS TO GO AROUND: For multiple cat households, please provide enough mats for each of us to practice on even if it means letting us use yours. And if you decide to practice at the same time as us and we want your mat as well, then please step aside or learn to work around us.
  • THE VACUUM CLEANER: The noise that comes blaring from this horrible machine makes us run the risk of getting our perfectly aligned chakras out of whack!
  • NOT PROVIDING ENOUGH CATNIP: Please make sure you always have plenty of catnip in the house especially during yoga time. Please keep on good terms with your catnip connection or better yet grow it in the house so you never run out.

These suggestions are just the tip of the iceberg. Felines, please chime in with your suggestions as well and have your humans post them in the comments section. We yoga cats must stand up for ourselves and make sure that our humans do not cause us to devolve!

Until next time…

Meow and Namste!

Love, Pippy

Who’s Practicing Yoga on the Feline Yogi Cat Mat?

Cinny and Ferg  became best cat friends forever the moment they saw each other. Cinny had been an only cat for quite sometime and made it perfectly clear to his humans that it better remain that way!

Being an only cat gave him more time to perfect his yoga poses and ponder what it means to be such an enlightened being without being bothered by another enlightened being.  However when Ferg unexpectedly joined the household it was friendship at first sight! He quickly made it clear that Ferg must stay and that finding him another home was not an option.

Cinny and Ferg love their yoga cat mat and take turns letting each other use it. More importantly they love each other which is what the true spirit of yoga is all about!

Meow and Namste Cinny and Ferg! You are both fantabulous feline yogis!

You may recognize Charlie and Priscilla as they are the owners of Stephanie, the purr-son who runs the fabulously popular Catsparella cat blog! Priscilla, according to Stephanie, spends a great deal of time on her practice but does take a wee bit objection when Charlie gets too close to her!  Priscilla however is enlightened enough to know her issues and is working on poses to allow her to become more accepting of  Charlie  so that eventually they might be able to practice yoga together.

Charlie, who is equally enlightened, understands that Priscilla needs  her space and is happy to oblige! When Priscilla is finished with her practice, Charlie claims his place on the Feline Yogi Yoga Cat Mat, practices a few standing poses,  and then engages in some deep breathing and purr chanting to center his mind, body, and spirit!

Charlie and Priscilla are both very accomplished yogis and Feline Yogi is proud to feature them as the Feline Yogis of the Week. Meow and  Namaste Priscilla and Charlie!

Mister preparing to practice some yoga poses!

Mister is a very skilled Feline Yogi from Wetumpka, Alabama (AL). !  His purrson knew early on that he exhibited  the characteristics of a very enlightened being. For starters, Mister is not one to sleep in. He gets up bright and early around 5:30am and insists his human purrson get up as well. He knows that the early bird gets the worm!

After a full day of yoga poses, breathing exercises, mediation, and prayer, Mister likes to lie on his back and take in the rays of the southern sunshine!

Mister is a true Feline Yogi! Meow and Namaste to the Feline Yogis of Alabama that Mister represents so well! Pippy, the Feline Yogini’s purrson is originally from Alabama and she knows firsthand how fantastic the kitties of  Alabama are!

Princess and Queenie were the lucky winners of The Conscious Cat giveaway of the Feline Yogi Cat Mat several weeks ago. These two lovely feline yogis are from the Rocky Mountain state of Colorado!

They are thrilled that their human entered the contest for them and even more thrilled that they won! Now that they have their new Feline Yogi Cat Mat they can delve even deeper into their yoga practices.

Accurate form and detailed attention to alignment are important to these two serious yoga practitioners. They both know that proper alignment encourages weak parts of the body to strengthen and stiff areas to release. This in turn awakens and realigns the whole feline body and takes them to the natural state of enlightenment where felines are meant to be!

Meow and Namste to these two gorgeous and inspiring felines!

Pippy on her yoga blanket

Pippy on her yoga blanket

Greetings Felines and the humans who serve us! Pippy trusts you all had a glorious weekend and are ready to hit the ground running with a new week! Spring is in the air and Pippy is excited about the possibilities.

Spring is a fabulous time for humans who have yet to try yoga to do so now! I know that the majority of my human readers are owned by cats so you have witnessed firsthand exactly what a yoga practice entails. Below are some of the ways a human can benefit from yoga and how your feline companions can benefit from your practice as well!

  • YOGA HELPS YOU SLEEP BETTER: It is important for humans owned by cats to get a good nights sleep so you can rise and shine extra early. We cats like to start the day with a hearty meal about an hour before the sun comes up. A regular yoga practice will help you sleep well so you are ready to jump out of bed and into the kitchen at the earliest hour possible!
  • YOGA HELPS YOU DEVELOP STRENGTH: I can’t tell you how many times my humans have to move the couch each week in order to fetch a lost toy. Transporting cats in carriers to vet appointments and lifting large boxes of cat litter off store shelves all require strength as well.
  • YOGA HELPS YOU DEVELOP FLEXIBILITY: Scooping litter boxes requires a lot of squatting and bending. Pippy here demands a clean litter boxes and I like mine scooped several times a day. Having a human who can keep up with this demand is very important. You may also be required to contort your body in several different types of positions while sleeping each night in order to accommodate where we like to sleep. So a regular yoga practice can help make you “bendier”.
  • YOGA HELPS YOU DEVELOP PATIENCE: Some days I like to get on the kitchen cabinets even though I know they are a “no no” place. But I can’t help it as they are so temping and the view so magnificent. I do not need to be spoken to in a loud obnoxious voice or be threatened with a water bottle. No I need a human with patience to wait until I’m good and ready to get down.
  • YOGA MAKES YOU MORE INTUITIVE: I, Pippy like to have my needs anticipated and I’m pretty sure I am not the only feline who feels this way! An intuitive human is important. For example, why should I have to beg for a snack or for anything for that matter? The more intuitive a human is the better they can serve the felines in their life.

So as you can see, a regular yoga practice is a win win for human and feline alike! When we’re happy then you are happy!

Until next week….

Meow and Namaste!

Love,

Pippy

Why Cats Are Natural Yogis

Pippy’s Yoga Column provides yoga tips and insights for humans and felines alike.  If you have a question, comment or topic you would like Pippy to address, please contact her at:   Pippy at Feline Yogi dot com.

Pippy-The Feline Yogini

Pippy-The Feline Yogini gracing us with her presence!

Greetings Felines and the humans who serve us!

Pippy has a busy week ahead of her. The Feline Yogi Cat mat collection is expanding and some new colors are going to be offered soon. I have a big job ahead of me managing my human so that these new colors get to market right away!  Plus the humans’ appointment with their tax preparer is Friday so can imagine the fun Pippy has had watching them try to get their acts together for that while at the same time keeping the female human on track for the new colors I’m offering.

Today’s question that Pippy will be answering is as follow: “Pippy, why are cats such natural yogis and we humans have to work so dang hard at it?”

Pippy hears you! It’s not fair is it? But what can you mere humans do? Felines come out of the womb enlightened and all knowing of the secrets of the universe and you humans just stagger along pitifully trying to figure it all out! However, the good news is Pippy is going to share with you the characteristics that make us felines such natural yogis and so “yoga like”! Although you will never be as enlightened as a cat, you can at least make an effort to emulate us as much as possible.

  • Cats are flexible-Enough said so Pippy doesn’t have to elaborate much on this point. Our spines are super flexible and all that enlightening energy moves through us quite effortlessly.
  • Cats are always in the moment-We don’t worry about the past or the future because we focus on the gift of the present. Felines take it one day at a time and we trust that our needs will be met, mostly by you humans! 🙂
  • Cats don’t compare ourselves to others-Each feline knows we are special and perfect just they way we are. This includes how we look and the homes we live in. We know that beauty and wealth comes in all different forms and we don’t all have to look and have the same things.
  • Cats are fearless-We have no qualms about trying out a new pose and will contort ourselves in any direction if it’s fun and feels good. We do not hesitate to crawl into small spaces like underneath the sofa or a house guest’s lap especially if they are allergic. We are not hesitant to explore the tops of kitchen cabinets, computer keyboards while in use, any type of box or sink. We are not shy when it comes to finding out what’s it’s like to hang from the living room drapes.
  • Cats can sit and meditate for hours without moving-Even though we look still and content (and we are!) we are always aware of our surroundings. Just open or even just think about opening a cupboard where there may be some food for us and we will come running!
  • Cats have presence-It is said that when a great yogi walks into the room their presence commands attention. Their energy can pick you up, make you feel at ease, and you automatically gravitate towards wanting to spend time with them. Since cats are great yogis, whoever said this most obviously was talking about a cat!

Until next week….

Meow and Namaste!

Love,

Pippy

Who’s Practicing Yoga on the Feline Yogi Cat Mat?

Wubbikins is! That’s who!

Wubbikins2

Wubbikins centering herself before a round of sun salutations.

Wubbikins is right at home on the Feline Yogi Yoga Cat Mat. Watching this beautiful young feline lady practice her yoga poses makes one wonder why Yoga Journal doesn’t feature feline yogis on their covers instead of humans.  And the day they do Wubbikins should be at the top of their list!

It wasn’t that long ago the Wubbikins was all alone in a window well with no signs of a mother cat anywhere.  Thanks goodness someone heard her down there and called the Animal Rescue League of Boston for help.  Her foster home which eventually became her forever home got this little feline yogi back up on her paws and she has blossomed into the yogi she was meant to be.

Wubbikin’s preferred place to practice yoga is in her human mom’s office. While her human is hard at work, Wubbikins busies herself with a full range of yoga asanas, breathing exercises, and of course that most important pose of all-resting pose.

Her humans tell us that even as a kitten Wubbikins showed signs of advanced feline enlightenment. Her mantra was and continues to be “Keep Calm and Wubbikins on!” What a great mantra for feline and human alike, huh? We of course would expect nothing less from such an accomplished feline yogi as Wubbikins!

Pippy’s Yoga Tip of the Week: Can you do Yoga with Music?

Pippy waiting for her favorite CD to start to play

Pippy waiting for her favorite CD to start to play

Greetings Felines and the humans who serve us!

Pippy had a wonderful relaxing weekend and trusts you did too! Pippy loves her weekends because my weekdays are full to the brim managing Feline Yogi and making sure my human doesn’t mess up any of the cat mats! In addition to serving as CEO of Feline Yogi, one of Pippy’s major responsibilities is quality control and I take it very seriously. It would be unacceptable for any cat to receive a faulty mat. Not on Pippy’s watch!!

Let’s delve right in to the question of week. Pippy, what do you think about practicing yoga while listening to music? I sometimes get bored while doing yoga and wonder if I should add some music such as rock, hip hop, or rap?

First of all Pippy has a question and then I will address practicing yoga while doing music. What’s with you humans and your constant desire for distraction? Whether it’s checking your email and FB accounts constantly on your smart phones, texting a bunch of gibberish, or having the big screen t.v. constantly blaring in the background with your 24 hour news stations, you humans will do practically anything to avoid being with yourselves!  Now Pippy will now end her rant, compose herself, and try her best to be of service by answering the question at hand.

Pippy is not against music while practicing the asanas. As a matter of fact, I, Pippy, sometimes listen to music as well while doing yoga. Some nice Indian or classical music can help one center themselves and go deeper inside. Some of Pippy’s favorite Cd’s to listen to while practicing yoga are Ravi Shankar and The Yoga Rhythms CD by Shiva Rea.

However, your question leads Pippy to believe that you are more interested in attending a Woodstock type event than practicing yoga. The music you listen to should enhance your yoga practice and guide you on your inner journey. Make no mistake, Pippy is fond of rap, rock, and hip hop but these types of music are not the best choice for quieting your mind and exploring your inner self. If you want to listen to these types of music then attend a rock concert or invite your friends over for a music party.

If you must have background noise while practicing, another great idea is to enlist the help of a feline to provide you with some beautiful purr chanting while you practice your poses! There are few sounds in the universe that are as calming and soothing as the music of the a cat’s purr! Purr!Purr!Purr!

Until next week do what Pippy does! Keep practicing your yoga and fully experience being who you are without having to divert your attention away from the present moment!

Meow and Namaste!
