Mister preparing to practice some yoga poses!

Mister is a very skilled Feline Yogi from Wetumpka, Alabama (AL). !  His purrson knew early on that he exhibited  the characteristics of a very enlightened being. For starters, Mister is not one to sleep in. He gets up bright and early around 5:30am and insists his human purrson get up as well. He knows that the early bird gets the worm!

After a full day of yoga poses, breathing exercises, mediation, and prayer, Mister likes to lie on his back and take in the rays of the southern sunshine!

Mister is a true Feline Yogi! Meow and Namaste to the Feline Yogis of Alabama that Mister represents so well! Pippy, the Feline Yogini’s purrson is originally from Alabama and she knows firsthand how fantastic the kitties of  Alabama are!

Greetings felines and the humans who serve us!

I, Pippy, have a very special story to share this week. Like most of you Pippy has a very busy schedule. Overseeing production of The Feline Yogi Cat Mat and more importantly making sure that my humans pulls her weight so Pippy doesn’t end up doing everything keep me extremely busy!

I do however manage to carve out some time just for myself! And in that free time lately, I have been studying the sacred yoga text The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. And you thought because I’m a cat that I spent my free time napping, huh? Not Pippy! I am always on a quest to better myself if there is such thing as a cat getting any better than we already are!

The Yoga Sutras outline the eight limbs of yoga which form the foundation of yoga practice. One of those limbs is Yama which is universal morality which includes the characteristic of Ahimsa. Ahimsa means kindness and violence towards all living things. I recently found out about a wonderful example of Ahimsa that I would like to share with you.

I have a pal named Wubbikins who I recently became friends with over the internet whose human writes a wonderful blog called Cat & Birdie. You humans aren’t the only species connecting on-line you know! Now back to my story. Wubbikins recently gave her Feline Yogi Cat Mat to the shelter kitties at the Animal Rescue League of Boston. One cat in particular named Princess has had a particularly hard time adapting to shelter life and Wubbikins wanted her happy so she let her have her green Feline Yogi Cat Mat. Princess loves the mat and her days are much brighter now. This is not just because of the mat but because of the love and concern that Wubbikins showed for her.

You see yoga is not just about how far we can stretch or those fancy beautiful poses we can do with out bodies. Yoga is also about what’s inside us and giving back. Wubbikins knows this and that’s what makes her such a wonderful feline yogi! Let’s all follow Wubbikins’ example and practice some loving kindness each day towards all God’s wonderful creatures.

Until next week….

Meow and Namaste!

Love,

Pippy

Princess and Queenie were the lucky winners of The Conscious Cat giveaway of the Feline Yogi Cat Mat several weeks ago. These two lovely feline yogis are from the Rocky Mountain state of Colorado!

They are thrilled that their human entered the contest for them and even more thrilled that they won! Now that they have their new Feline Yogi Cat Mat they can delve even deeper into their yoga practices.

Accurate form and detailed attention to alignment are important to these two serious yoga practitioners. They both know that proper alignment encourages weak parts of the body to strengthen and stiff areas to release. This in turn awakens and realigns the whole feline body and takes them to the natural state of enlightenment where felines are meant to be!

Meow and Namste to these two gorgeous and inspiring felines!

Pippy on her yoga blanket

Pippy on her yoga blanket

Greetings Felines and the humans who serve us! Pippy trusts you all had a glorious weekend and are ready to hit the ground running with a new week! Spring is in the air and Pippy is excited about the possibilities.

Spring is a fabulous time for humans who have yet to try yoga to do so now! I know that the majority of my human readers are owned by cats so you have witnessed firsthand exactly what a yoga practice entails. Below are some of the ways a human can benefit from yoga and how your feline companions can benefit from your practice as well!

  • YOGA HELPS YOU SLEEP BETTER: It is important for humans owned by cats to get a good nights sleep so you can rise and shine extra early. We cats like to start the day with a hearty meal about an hour before the sun comes up. A regular yoga practice will help you sleep well so you are ready to jump out of bed and into the kitchen at the earliest hour possible!
  • YOGA HELPS YOU DEVELOP STRENGTH: I can’t tell you how many times my humans have to move the couch each week in order to fetch a lost toy. Transporting cats in carriers to vet appointments and lifting large boxes of cat litter off store shelves all require strength as well.
  • YOGA HELPS YOU DEVELOP FLEXIBILITY: Scooping litter boxes requires a lot of squatting and bending. Pippy here demands a clean litter boxes and I like mine scooped several times a day. Having a human who can keep up with this demand is very important. You may also be required to contort your body in several different types of positions while sleeping each night in order to accommodate where we like to sleep. So a regular yoga practice can help make you “bendier”.
  • YOGA HELPS YOU DEVELOP PATIENCE: Some days I like to get on the kitchen cabinets even though I know they are a “no no” place. But I can’t help it as they are so temping and the view so magnificent. I do not need to be spoken to in a loud obnoxious voice or be threatened with a water bottle. No I need a human with patience to wait until I’m good and ready to get down.
  • YOGA MAKES YOU MORE INTUITIVE: I, Pippy like to have my needs anticipated and I’m pretty sure I am not the only feline who feels this way! An intuitive human is important. For example, why should I have to beg for a snack or for anything for that matter? The more intuitive a human is the better they can serve the felines in their life.

So as you can see, a regular yoga practice is a win win for human and feline alike! When we’re happy then you are happy!

Until next week….

Meow and Namaste!

Love,

Pippy

Pippy posing on her Yoga Cat Mat

Pippy posing on her Yoga Cat Mat

Greetings Felines and the humans who serve us! Pippy had a wonderful Easter Sunday lounging in the window observing the birds in the garden. I hope your weekend was restful as well. The following question was recently sent to me and is as follows: Pippy I recently read something about humans and something called yoga dancing. What is this and do felines “yoga dance” as well?

I, Pippy, your humble feline guru is happy to broaden your horizons by expanding on this fun filled subject. Yoga dancing is spontaneous ecstatic free-form movement through yoga. One begins with some simple yoga poses. Then you gradually start to dance and set your body free while moving to the beat of music from all over the world. At the end of the session, you practice relaxation pose just as you would in any other yoga class.

Pippy thinks yoga dancing is an excellent way for uptight humans to let themselves go and more importantly it allows them to distance themselves from their smart phones for a while! It’s hard to constantly be checking your phone when you are  liberating your mind, body, and spirit with fast wild expressive dance moves!

Felines also do a version of yoga dancing that Pippy likes to call The Yoga Cat Tail Dance. Our tails are fascinating and tempting to chase and it can be frustrating when we have difficulty catching them. This dance is a zen exercise in making peace with our tails as is an affirmation from one of Pippy’s favorite books  Meditations for Cats Who Do Too Much: Today I will try really hard to remember that the tail that looks so tempting is my own, and I have already caught it! “

Below Pippy shares a short 90 second video of my feline companion and housemate Rorschach practicing The Yoga Cat Tail Dance. Enjoy!

Until next week….

Pippy

Roxy is! That’s who!

Roxy is a stunningly gorgeous girl kitty who keeps herself in shape physically and spiritually with her yoga practice. She and her older brother Rigby who was last weeks Featured Feline Yogi own the human who was the winner of Catsparella’s Feline Yogi Cat Mat giveaway a few weeks back.

You may remember that Rigby’s style was fairly low key and subdued. Roxy is the polar opposite and prefers a more active yoga practice full of challenging poses. Her practice is mediation in motion. The more she moves, the more enlightened she becomes!

The sisal rope and catnip stuffed twine ball are the perfect props to assist her as she practices a series of flowing postures with rhythmic breathing for an intense body-mind workout. After her yoga practice, Roxy likes to sit and contemplate the secrets of the universe! What are those secrets those of us of the human persuasion might ask?  Roxy says you would have to be a cat to understand! 🙂

Why Cats Are Natural Yogis

Pippy-The Feline Yogini

Pippy-The Feline Yogini gracing us with her presence!

Greetings Felines and the humans who serve us!

Pippy has a busy week ahead of her. The Feline Yogi Cat mat collection is expanding and some new colors are going to be offered soon. I have a big job ahead of me managing my human so that these new colors get to market right away!  Plus the humans’ appointment with their tax preparer is Friday so can imagine the fun Pippy has had watching them try to get their acts together for that while at the same time keeping the female human on track for the new colors I’m offering.

Today’s question that Pippy will be answering is as follow: “Pippy, why are cats such natural yogis and we humans have to work so dang hard at it?”

Pippy hears you! It’s not fair is it? But what can you mere humans do? Felines come out of the womb enlightened and all knowing of the secrets of the universe and you humans just stagger along pitifully trying to figure it all out! However, the good news is Pippy is going to share with you the characteristics that make us felines such natural yogis and so “yoga like”! Although you will never be as enlightened as a cat, you can at least make an effort to emulate us as much as possible.

  • Cats are flexible-Enough said so Pippy doesn’t have to elaborate much on this point. Our spines are super flexible and all that enlightening energy moves through us quite effortlessly.
  • Cats are always in the moment-We don’t worry about the past or the future because we focus on the gift of the present. Felines take it one day at a time and we trust that our needs will be met, mostly by you humans! 🙂
  • Cats don’t compare ourselves to others-Each feline knows we are special and perfect just they way we are. This includes how we look and the homes we live in. We know that beauty and wealth comes in all different forms and we don’t all have to look and have the same things.
  • Cats are fearless-We have no qualms about trying out a new pose and will contort ourselves in any direction if it’s fun and feels good. We do not hesitate to crawl into small spaces like underneath the sofa or a house guest’s lap especially if they are allergic. We are not hesitant to explore the tops of kitchen cabinets, computer keyboards while in use, any type of box or sink. We are not shy when it comes to finding out what’s it’s like to hang from the living room drapes.
  • Cats can sit and meditate for hours without moving-Even though we look still and content (and we are!) we are always aware of our surroundings. Just open or even just think about opening a cupboard where there may be some food for us and we will come running!
  • Cats have presence-It is said that when a great yogi walks into the room their presence commands attention. Their energy can pick you up, make you feel at ease, and you automatically gravitate towards wanting to spend time with them. Since cats are great yogis, whoever said this most obviously was talking about a cat!

Until next week….

Meow and Namaste!

Pippy

Who’s Practicing Yoga on the Feline Yogi Cat Mat?

Rigby is! That’s who!

Rigby2

Rigby perfecting Resting Pose on his Feline Yogi Cat Mat

Rigby’s human was the winner of Catsparella’s Feline Yogi Cat Mat giveaway a few weeks back. Rigby and his feline housemate Roxy (who will be featured next week) were thrilled!  They are both serious about their yoga and the Feline Yogi Cat Mat is a great enhancement to their practices.

Rigby has perfected the art of resting pose but there’s more going on than you may think!  While practicing this most important asana, Rigby is doing quite a bit of inner work and self reflection. For him, resting pose is process of self discovery.  It’s an opportunity to reclaim his inner kitten and get a firm grasp on what it means to be a modern feline in today’s fast paced world.

Rigby knows he belongs to a superior species and it’s up to felines like him to be an example of enlightenment to humans everywhere. The Feline Yogi Cat Mat gives him a safe place to center himself and concentrate on this important mission. So you see, Rigby is more than just a vision of loveliness for us humans to adore, he is a spiritual warrior!

Pippy taking time to stop and enjoy the flowers!

Pippy taking time to stop and enjoy the flowers!

Greetings felines and the humans who serve us. Pippy welcomes you to the beginning of the human cultural work week by wishing you a Happy Monday! I think the felines will agree with me when I say I have never understood the human need to name chunks of time with seven words that repeat themselves over and over but then Pippy (thank God) is not human!

Speaking of humans, a human writes to Pippy this week with the following question: Pippy can you share with me some of the overall health benefits that you have reaped from  your yoga practice? I am thinking of starting a yoga practice and need some motivation.

Pippy is in great health due to my ongoing yoga practice and more than happy to share the benefits I have reaped.

  • SOUND SLEEP: Pippy sleeps very soundly and never has trouble doing so. While sleeping I have vivid vibrant dreams. I often dream I am a cat in Ancient Egypt and humans everywhere are falling at my feet singing my praises and chanting the following: Pippy, Pippy, Pippy-You are a beautiful feline Goddess and we adore and worship you!
  • EXCELLENT HEARING SKILLS: Pippy can be in a deep deep slumber on the other side of the house far far away from the kitchen but I can hear a can opener coming out of the kitchen drawer practically before it happens!
  • CRAVES HEALTHY FOOD:  Pippy’s high protein diet  keeps me healthy and strong. I do admit that I occasionally steal the pita bread and tortilla chips off the kitchen cabinet when the humans aren’t looking. I even got into the butter this past weekend. The female human was not amused but I thought it was really funny and yummy!
  • LESS STRESS: As a young kitten Pippy had an epiphany while deep into downward facing cat pose.  I suddenly realized there was no need to ever stress out about any of my needs being met because that’s what humans are for! And they are so good at it and must enjoy it otherwise they would take steps to stop, don’t  you think?
  • IMPROVED CONCENTRATION: Pippy can concentrate one one object for hours on end. For example, I often sit close to the at the refrigerator and stare intently because sooner or later one of the humans will open it and I will then demand a yummy treat!

Until next week….

Meow and Namaste!

Love,

Pippy

Ni is! That’s who!

Kitten Ni taking a well deserved break after a very vigorous yoga session

Kitten Ni taking a well deserved break after a very vigorous yoga session

Kitten Ni practicing a side stretch meditative pose

Kitten Ni practicing a side stretch meditative pose

Ni is just a kitten but she’s already practicing a very vigorous form of yoga. So vigorous that according to Ni’s human, who is none other than Cat Lady Royalty Ms. Sarah Donner, Kitten Ni could barely stay awake for the camera!

You see Ni had been practicing a variety of complex poses to warm up for her photo shoot. By the time her human got the camera out, Ni was winding down into a very low key meditative side stretch.  Suddenly Ni was deep into a meditative feline blissful state (aka downward facing zzz’s pose) and there was no way Ms. Donner could awaken her for something as superficial as a photo shoot!

Kitten Ni’s mantra is “Take life one pose at a time!” We expect great things from Kitten Ni and her yoga practice on her Feline Yogi Cat Mat will help her get there! Meow and Namaste Ni!
