Pippy’s Yoga Tip of the Week: Nap More and Stress Less!

pippyonwave

As we enter the pinnacle of this holiday season, I sense that most of you humans are walking stress balls. I know they are around my house. I personally don’t get why everyone is in such a tizzy but then I am not human (thank God!). Speaking of humans, one recently said to me, “Pippy, what can I do to minimize my stress level during this season of joy?” I can sum up the answer in two words: Nap More!

Never underestimate the power of power naps. From my point of view, there is no reason ever to need a reason to take a nap. Nap because you deserve it. Nap because you just ate a big meal. Nap to pamper yourself. Nap because you want to.

Naps reduce stress and anxiety therefore being good for your health as well. With the exception of the occasional worry that the female human lady of the house may be late in serving our meals, I have very little stress in my life thanks to frequent napping. I don’t fret over paying bills, running errands, or what the neighbors think. I also don’t give a hoot about inflation, ballooning deficits, or what political party is in power and whether or not we go over the fiscal cliff.

Naps can be taken anywhere so don’t just limit yourself to the couch or bed. Behind the computer or even on top of it is a great place to nap because of the extra warmth provided. The closet is another great place to grab a few winks. The next time someone in your household places warm clean freshly dried clothes anywhere in your house, jump on it immediately even if you are in the middle of an important task. Some other ideas include bathroom sinks and tubs, your spouse’s desk chair (especially if they work at home) and the kitchen table.

Naps can enhance your creativity. I once tore the lining from the front end of the bed’s box spring thus resulting in a cozy hammock to hide in. This kind of creativity  would not have been possible if I were over-worked and sleep deprived. Just imagine the works of art you will be able to accomplish once you get into the napping habit.

Naps don’t have to be at specific times. Forget anything you’ve been taught about the proper time to take naps. Nap in the morning, afternoon, and evening. Nap when guests are over and when they are not. Sometimes I put off important tasks like bird watching or stalking my toys because I feel a napping urge coming on.

Napping makes you more beautiful. I am living proof that napping makes you drop dead stunningly gorgeous.

So in the mist of all the shopping, parties, travel, family spats, and all the other things you humans like to engage in, don’t forget to find time to take a nap this holiday season.

Now I’m off to (you guessed it!) take a nap!

Who’s Practicing Yoga on The Yoga Cat Mat?

Billy is! That’s who!

Billy loves The Yoga Cat Mat!

Billy is a very serious feline yoga practitioner and The Yoga Cat Mat has made it easier for him to perfect his yoga asanas. As you can see from the photo, he takes full advantage of yoga props as well!

However, not too long ago Billy was on the streets of Los Angeles in a neighborhood known for having coyotes! Yikes! Thanks to two wonderful kind humans, Billy was rescued from his dangerous situation. Steve and Candy welcomed him into their home with open arms and he was just as much of a blessing to them as they were to him.

Billy will forever be safe and sound now.  Billy can now concentrate on his yoga poses and enjoying the wonderful home he was so fortunate to find. Also, a big acknowledgment to Luxe Paws, an animal welfare group based in the Los Angeles Silver Lake area for assisting with Billy’s rescue as well!

Pippy’s Yoga Tip of The Week: The Best Time to Practice Yoga

Pippy Practicing Sphinx Pose

I’m often asked the question “Pippy when should I practice yoga? Is there a particular time of the day that is preferable?” My advice is to schedule your yoga practice at the time that works best for you. I personally prefer different poses at different times throughout the day. I realize most of you humans are busy with that thing you call “work” and various other distractions but if I can find time to incorporate poses into my busy schedule then so can you!

Below is a typical day of “Pippy Yoga” to inspire and motivate you.

SUN SALUTATIONS:

In the wee wee hours of the morning, usually around 4am, I practice a version of running sun salutation vinyasas. I race 8-9 times through the living room, kitchen, computer room, and then finally into the bedroom where I leap over the sleeping humans.

PARTNER YOGA POSES:

Rorschach and/or Hunter (two of the other felines who live with me) and I enjoy partner yoga at the foot of the human’s bed anywhere between 4:30-5:30am. In the middle of our practice the humans start getting all in a tizzy and yell at us to calm down but we keep right on going. Nothing interferes with my yoga practice! Plus we are doing them a service by helping them get up since we will all need to break our morning fast very very soon.

RESTING POSE:

After I eat and have a full belly I practice Shavasana aka resting pose. As a matter of fact I practice this pose quite a bit during the day even when my belly is empty.

SPHINX POSE:

When the humans are up and about during the day I practice Sphinx pose which is sometimes referred to by Westerners as Bhujanngasana.  Depending on my mood, I pretend I am an Egyptian desert statue of a hybrid creature or a Greek demon with a tail and wings.  This pose centers me and gives my humans a chance to admire my beauty and skill.

TWISTING POSES:

I practice variations of twists throughout the day. You might mistake me for sleeping but nothing could be further from the truth. I am actually restoring my spine’s natural range of motion and detoxing my inner organs.

RESTORATIVE POSES

To calm my mind and wind down from a busy day I utilize the pillows on the humans’ bed right about the time they are getting ready to retire around 11am.

MEDITATION:

Throughout the day I practice mediation several times. I fixate my glance at the birds outside the window. Oh, they would make a yummy treat but the human won’t let me out so I can try and catch them!

Until next week….

Pippy’s Yoga Tip of the Week: What to Wear!

Pippy in deep meditation

Recently a human yogi asked me “Pippy, what kind of clothing is preferable for the yoga practice?  A tight little spandex type outfit or a loose flowing cotton type garb?”  What’s up with humans and this obsession with what to wear? Especially those human yogis in the Western world.  I have one outfit that I wear constantly and it’s perfect for lounging, eating, bird watching, bug patrol, partaking of catnip, chasing the male cats around the house, and yes even yoga!

Since you humans were made so that you’re constantly having to cover yourselves up, you do not have the luxury of the one exquisite outfit that us felines do. That being the case, I would suggest you dress as much like a cat as possible when practicing yoga.  No that does not mean leopard prints, cat glasses, or those crazy hair headbands with cat ears sticking up on them. Nor does it mean crazy eyeliners that try to imitate the patterns around our eyes or drawing whiskers on your face.  It does mean natural fibers and colors such as black, white, orange, gray, silver, brown. Tabby and calico shaped patterns are a smart choice as well. And how about a tuxedo look? Now that would turns some heads in your yoga classes, right?

In addition to my one all purpose outfit, I also go barefoot all the time.  I don’t pluck my eyebrows or wear polish on my paw nails. I don’t cut my hair or dye it. I appreciate my natural beauty. I’m a real earthy granola kitty. I am a Feline Yogi!
